Potato genomics research has entered the phase of fast functional characterization of all protein coding genes. For efficient gene function analysis, researchers can choose from the toolbox of plant functional genomics. Although traditional breeding approach have been developed and deployed many functional varieties, but not yet clearly define the functionality of gene and traits. Therefore, what we need is a strategy that can provide functionality of the genome for trait specific development of varieties. This small article could boost to mine and strengthen the future advance functional genomics technology like CRIPSR, Activation tagging and TILLING, ECO-TILLING would employ to develop the fruitful healthy and safety potato varieties. The strength of functional genomics is that it enables us to understand the functionality of gene in various emerging problems of the potato. The vision is that in the near future it will be possible to develop potato varieties rich in nutrient sources and extended to non-traditional area of the country.
